Techie Thursday - What's Coming to Netflix in August?

new-on-netflix-august-2016

Although we’re still technically in the middle of summer, our predictably unpredictable Irish weather has resulted in us getting lashed on in between intermittent sunny spells. Check out our list of films arriving to Netflix in August for those inevitable rainy days next month.

Sicario (2015)

Emily Blunt stars in this intense crime-thriller directed by Denis Villeneuve. The plot follows an FBI agent who is enlisted to help a task force take down the leader of a powerful Mexican drug cartel that was responsible for the death of members of her team. Sicario was nominated for three Academy Awards, received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and was one of the sleeper hits of 2015.

Project Nim (2011)

Project Nim is a documentary about a research project in the 1970s where a team raised a baby chimp as a human child. The project was part of an experiment intended to break the language barrier between animals and people by teaching the chimp (Nim Chimpsky) sign language and raising him in a human environment. Project Nim is often funny, profound and poignant as it reveals both the nature of Nim and of our relationship with animals. The film was nominated for a BAFTA and received multiple other awards.

Brooklyn (2015)

Brooklyn, adapted from the Colm Tóibín novel of the same name, tells the story of a young Irish immigrant in 1950s New York. After falling for and marrying a local, Ellis (our very own Saoirse Ronan), suddenly has to return home to visit her mother and on her arrival back to Ireland must decide whether to stay in her hometown of Enniscorthy or return to Brooklyn. Brooklyn was one of the biggest films of 2015 and was nominated for three Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actress as well as being a big box office success.

Creed (2015)

Creed is a spin-off/sequel to the Rocky film series, directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan. Creed follows the story of Adonis ‘Donnie’ Johnson Creed, son of Apollo Creed from the earlier Rocky films, as he leaves his job to pursue his dream of becoming a professional boxer. Donnie enlists the help of Rocky Balboa as he seeks to emulate his late father and forge his own legacy. Creed injected some much needed pep into the Rocky franchise and was met with critical acclaim as well as receiving an Academy Award nomination for Sylvester Stallone’s performance.

Child's Play (1987)

Child’s Play is a 1988 supernatural slasher film written and directed by Tom Holland. The plot follows a doll called Chucky who has been inhabited by the soul of a serial killer and is hell-bent on continuing his rampage in his new form. As ridiculous as it sounds, Child’s Play has a cult-following and has spawned five sequels so far with another set to be released next year. A must-watch for fans of cheesy horror.
