What is Limescale?
Limescale can build up in your coffee machine over time, which can affect the taste and quality of your coffee. Limescale is a white chalk-like substance made up of calcium carbonate. It can build up in your kettle, coffee machine, steam oven and other appliances that use hot water. If you live in an area with ‘hard water’ you might find limescale to be more of an issue. Limescale is caused by a build-up of the minerals found in tap water. Some areas have more minerals in the water which caused more of a limescale issue. The production of limescale is also increased by the application of heat, which is why we notice it in our kettles and coffee machines.
What type of water does my area have?
If you want to check the water hardness in your area you can enter your address in the water.ie address finder. The type of water will affect how regularly you’ll need to descale your machine. The amount you use the machine will also have an impact on the limescale build-up.
How often should I descale my machine?
Nespresso recommends that you descale your machine every 3 months or after 300 capsules, whichever comes first. This will prevent the build-up of limescale and help to prolong the life of your machine. If you live in a hard water area this may be required more frequently
How do I clean my coffee machine?
The best way to remove limescale from your Nespresso Machine is to use a descaler. You can purchase these for original and Vertuo capsule machines directly from Nespresso. Descalers contain hazardous ingredients and should be handled with extreme care. They can cause skin irritation and serious eye injury. Be sure to keep out of reach of children and wash your hands thoroughly after handling or ideally use gloves.
Nespresso has a handy video guide section which shows you how to descale your coffee machine. Just select the correct model for you and you can view the instructional videos and troubleshooting information.
