Over the last couple of years, e-scooters have blown up in popularity. In many ways, they are convenient, modern, and cool. However, each electric scooter offers something different, and there are pros and cons to every purchase. Let's take a look at some of the things you need to know before buying an electric scooter in Ireland and the different modelsavailable in-store and online!
A couple of important things should be pointed out before you commit to buying an electric scooter.
All electric scooters have a battery included, and this battery needs to be regularly charged to move the scooter! You won't get the chance to scoot around for hours and hours, but you will get around 20-25km of travel per charge. You can also remove the battery and charge it separately to the scooter so that you are not carrying it around everywhere. Just something to keep in mind!
Whilst there are no stringent laws surrounding e-scooters in Ireland, the government will be sure to introduce regulations surrounding their use very soon. By the time you read this article, those regulations may already have been introduced, so make sure to read up on them and see what is allowed and what is not on Irish roads or in public areas.
The age-old question 'how fast is too fast?' applies here. Most electric scooters have three-speed modes so you can always control how fast you can go. However, before buying, you should research how fast certain scooters can go. The last thing you want is to buy a scooter that is too slow or too fast for you! This is especially relevant depending on the age group, whether you require a kids' electric scooter or an adult electric scooter.
The e-scooter market is growing every year, and when looking to find the best scooter for you, it is always best to research some of the cool and modern features available with newer models. Here are some features that we think all of thebest adult electric scooters should have.
Many scooters have a 20-25 km range. However, newer lithium batteries are being developed and are available that will give your scooter more than double the range. New e-scooter models have batteries that, with a full charge, will let you travel 45km!
One of the most important parts of an e-scooters arsenal is its braking system. After all, e-scooters can travel at high speeds, so being able to brake at a moment's notice is important. Many new models will have a dual braking system for added safety. This ensures that the braking distance is shortened, and the braking response is far quicker.
Safety first! Any vehicle that moves should have good lighting capabilities to enable those travelling at night to see and to be seen. Look for a scooter with a headlight and taillight combination.
If you want a cool new way to quickly get from A to B and have a little money to spend on yourself, then yes, an e-scooter is a good purchase. Just be sure to research what is required to maintain the scooter, from tyre management to periodic charging.
However, if you travel a lot and are always on the go, then an e-scooter might not be too practical a purchase for you!
Overall, electric scooters are not too appropriate for younger children. However, there are options available for children, and although they are not as fast (many scooters topping 14-16 kmh), many arejust as stylish!. Another positive surrounding a kids' e-scooter is that they are typically cheaper than adult scooters. For example, a good quality electric scooter for kids will set you back around €150-240; this is compared to the €400-800 that you may have to pay for an adult scooter! Kids' scooters have a max weight, though, so don't go getting any crazy ideas to try and save money!

Under current Irish law, there are no specific regulations surrounding e-scooters. Use of the scooters is legal, but there are no laws surrounding their use as of yet. This is expected to change in the near future.
As of early 2022, e-scooters are not allowed to be used on public roads in Ireland. This is because of the lack of regulation regarding speed and protective equipment.
This really depends on the scooter in question; however, most e-scooters can reach speeds of 30-35km/h. However, this speed is only for e-scooters that use a bike lane. Going at these speeds on a road where you can cause an accident with other traffic is not allowed.
